Handyman Tips from 25+ Years in the Trade

Finding Wall Studs Without a Stud Finder

Knock on the wall and listen. Hollow sounds mean no stud. A solid, dull thud means you’ve found one. Studs are typically 16" apart from center to center.

Fix a Stripped Screw Hole

Stuff a wooden toothpick into the stripped hole with a dab of wood glue. Snap off the excess, let it dry, and re-drive your screw.

WD-40 Is Not a Lubricant

WD-40 is a water displacer and solvent — not a long-term lubricant. For squeaky hinges, use a silicone-based spray or dry graphite instead.

When to Call a Pro

If a project involves electrical work, plumbing, load-bearing walls, your roof, or anything requiring a permit — call a licensed professional.
